Chapter Thirteen

“The Battle Born,” I muttered as my eyes began to adjust to the land of the waking.

“I told you before; I have a name,” she growled.

I considered her carefully before I continued, but it was impossible to do that without considering the cold iron cage surrounding me as well. Given the Fae reaction to the touch of cold iron in general, this seemed excessive. Or given how much I fight I had in me when I got here, maybe just a bit cautious and otherwise wholly appropriate. “Yeah, I remember. Debbie, right?”

Debbie shifted slightly at that. “That’s right. Got a problem with that?”

I let out a sigh at her aggressive tone, trying to get a better look at the windowless room. The basement, no doubt. “No, no problem. Just surprised, is all. Sort of how I’m surprised that you’re willing to actually talk all of a sudden.”

“You tried to ambush me, and whatever your words, you and I both know why you were there,” Debbie scoffed. “Why would I think you came to talk?”

“Because it’s better than fighting?” I sighed. I had no energy at the moment and certainly wasn’t up for a debate. “I suppose it was too much to think you could even talk at all in the first place, wasn’t it?”

“That right there! That is my problem with you! With all of you!” Debbie suddenly roared, and the ferocity of it made me sit up and flinch, even with the cage between us. “You think you know a damn thing about any of us! As if what we’re called is what we are. The Battle Born, good for fighting and that’s it, right? And what about you, Chalsarda? You think I don’t know about you?”

Inside, my body was like a battery that couldn’t hold a charge. Even her burst of excitement only roused my attention for an instant, but even with that accusation, I couldn’t be bothered to press back. “I’m sure you do.” It was all I could muster.

Her words came as accusations. “Blood soaked thief? Manipulator? Abarta’s assassin?”

I stirred at the last one and responded softly. “I don’t work for him anymore.”

“No, but you came after me anyway. Yeah, I know all about you. It’s in our namesake. We’re born for battle, nothing else. But only a fool can’t see past our physical prowess. We know our enemies, and I was taught much about you. You’d be shocked and sickened by what I know.”

“Then you know about Alistair?” I asked. “You have to know that much. And if you did, you would know what he is. He poisoned my friend and the only way he spares her life if I bring you in for him. It wasn’t personal, and I don’t like that I’m doing it.”

“I can believe that. But that makes all of this that much worse, doesn’t it? You have resources and connections. Did you even try to find another way before you attacked me? No, you didn’t, did you? Because violence is what you’re good at, it’s who you are.
