Chapter Thirteen
âThe Battle Born,â I muttered as my eyes began to adjust to the land of the waking.
âI told you before; I have a name,â she growled.
I considered her carefully before I continued, but it was impossible to do that without considering the cold iron cage surrounding me as well. Given the Fae reaction to the touch of cold iron in general, this seemed excessive. Or given how much I fight I had in me when I got here, maybe just a bit cautious and otherwise wholly appropriate. âYeah, I remember. Debbie, right?â
Debbie shifted slightly at that. âThatâs right. Got a problem with that?â
I let out a sigh at her aggressive tone, trying to get a better look at the windowless room. The basement, no doubt. âNo, no problem. Just surprised, is all. Sort of how Iâm surprised that youâre willing to actually talk all of a sudden.â
âYou tried to ambush me, and whatever your words, you and I both know why you were there,â Debbie scoffed. âWhy would I think you came to talk?â
âBecause itâs better than fighting?â I sighed. I had no energy at the moment and certainly wasnât up for a debate. âI suppose it was too much to think you could even talk at all in the first place, wasnât it?â
âThat right there! That is my problem with you! With all of you!â Debbie suddenly roared, and the ferocity of it made me sit up and flinch, even with the cage between us. âYou think you know a damn thing about any of us! As if what weâre called is what we are. The Battle Born, good for fighting and thatâs it, right? And what about you, Chalsarda? You think I donât know about you?â
Inside, my body was like a battery that couldnât hold a charge. Even her burst of excitement only roused my attention for an instant, but even with that accusation, I couldnât be bothered to press back. âIâm sure you do.â It was all I could muster.
Her words came as accusations. âBlood soaked thief? Manipulator? Abartaâs assassin?â
I stirred at the last one and responded softly. âI donât work for him anymore.â
âNo, but you came after me anyway. Yeah, I know all about you. Itâs in our namesake. Weâre born for battle, nothing else. But only a fool canât see past our physical prowess. We know our enemies, and I was taught much about you. Youâd be shocked and sickened by what I know.â
âThen you know about Alistair?â I asked. âYou have to know that much. And if you did, you would know what he is. He poisoned my friend and the only way he spares her life if I bring you in for him. It wasnât personal, and I donât like that Iâm doing it.â
âI can believe that. But that makes all of this that much worse, doesnât it? You have resources and connections. Did you even try to find another way before you attacked me? No, you didnât, did you? Because violence is what youâre good at, itâs who you are.
